How do doulas make a difference?

Updated: Aug 1, 2022

If a doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it.” -Dr. John H. Kennell

As we continue #worlddoulaweek I just wanted to bring to light how do doulas make a difference? Birth is such an incredible experience, and it is such a memorable point in every mom's life. We can recall little things that no one else would’ve noticed, things people said, the parts we loved, and the parts we hated. As a doula, we do our best to create a safe and positive environment for you, whether you love to have candles or twinkling lights, music playing, or someone holding your hand. We know what you desire in your birth, and will try our best to make it happen. If you want unmedicated spontaneous labor, we encourage you to go for it. If you want all the drugs or an elective cesarean, we will make it the best experience we can for you. We will hold space and be there for you to feel all of your emotions, if you want to dance and laugh, we will dance and laugh with you. If you want to cry, we will be there to be a shoulder to cry on. We will encourage your partner to be involved and to support you. We will squeeze your hips and help you change up positions for a quicker and more effective labor. And we will believe in you, because we know how strong you are. We know how powerful you are. We will support you through all your decisions, and remind you that you have choices. We want you to be in control of your birth, your baby, and your body. And while doulas have a ton of statistical benefits such as reducing cesarean rate, reducing the length of labor, reducing the use of Pitocin, and lowering the need for pain medication*, this is why I believe doulas make a difference… by creating those beautiful and empowering memories. Because I know that a mom will remember this forever, and I want her to have the best experience and memories that she could have. *STUDY FROM HODNETT ED. GATES S HOFMEYR GJ. SAKALA C.
